BROOKLYN, NY /Christian News/ — One of the most revered choirs in America, The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir has recorded the fourth Christmas CD of its nearly 40-year career. The new set of holiday tunes, A Brooklyn Tabernacle Christmas (Integrity Music), has debuted at #2 on Billboard’s Top Holiday Albums chart – right behind Celtic Thunder. The six-time Grammy Award winning, gold-selling ensemble introduces a dozen new and original holiday songs to usher in what’s considered as the most wonderful time of the year.
“I’m always looking for Christmas music and it’s hard to come by,” says choir founder Carol Cymbala. “This past January, we had no music, no lyrics. We had nothing. We wrote these songs and several others. By the time June came around, everything was written and recorded, which was a record amount of time to finish everything.”
The charming tunes range from lush, Nelson Riddle-styled songs to up-tempo numbers like “Worship The King” with guest artists including Anthony Evans, Nicole Binion and TaRanda Green.
The choir will perform some of the songs throughout the program on the “Good Morning America” television broadcast on Thursday, December 23 in ABC’s New York studios.
The Brooklyn, New York-based choir was founded by Carol Cymbala (wife of The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir’s Senior Pastor Jim Cymbala and daughter of the church founder, the late Rev. Clair Hutchins) in 1973 with eight members. The 300-voice troupe is a blend of ethnic and economic backgrounds, with members ranging from lawyers and doctors to ex-crack addicts. Over the years, the choir has sold over four million albums, earned six Grammy Awards, seven Dove Awards, two #1 Billboard charting CDs and most recently, two Stellar Award nominations.
Cymbala hopes the new CD will fill listeners’ hearts with the spirit of the season.
“I’d like them to just have a consciousness of God’s great love that He’d send His only begotten son to die for us,” explains Cymbala. “That Jesus would experience the pain and the humanity that we experience. It’s about tying in the Birth with the Cross.”
